Ed,
Let us know when you're coming out if you make it down to the Philadelphia area. Maybe we can hook up for a refreshment or a bite after your letterboxing adventures?

I have made one change to this clue and updated the
web page, so if you have downloaded it or printed
it in anticipation of a hunt, you may want to get
the new version (although it is still findable with
the old version).

Dear Randy,
I don't have the slightest idea what to make of them at this time,
but I think the clues to your new box are really cool!

Clues for a new box can be found at http://www.mapsurfer.com/boxes/box14.html
Due to the fact that I did not have my letterboxing supplies on hand at
the time I made it, I had to improvise at a local K-mart under a bit of
time pressure, so the stamp is a bit lame (what else is new), but the
place is cool, and that is more important (at least to me).
Happy hunting :-)

Randy:
Like Tom, I haven't a clue what the clue means - a puzzler it is - nice
interesting tack you've taken.
Two new letterboxes in Shirley Center, MA last Sat - clues to be sent to
Tom tomorrow, maybe scans as well?

I was hacking around an old library in a Colorado ghost town,
and I found an interesting manuscript. I managed to adapt
that, along with the carved pieces of a San Pedro cactus
using a tire iron, into a letterbox. Those of you who like
mystery boxes can find these clues to a new one (mapsurfer #25)
at http://www.mapsurfer.com/boxes/box25.html

Clues: easy
Hike: easy
Be sure to bring your compass, youll need it!
Nature center with exhibits, trails, pond, tot playground with picnic tables
and a picnic shelter. Bathrooms inside nature center, (which is closed
Tuesdays and holidays.) Pets allowed on leashes.
Directions to Hidden Pond: Beltway exit 57A (95 South) to west on Old Keene
Mill Road (Rt. 644) to left on Greeley Blvd. (second left after Rolling
Road) to entrance at end of street.
Box 1
Take the paved trail to the Nature Center. Go to the right of the Nature
Center and take the stairway around to the back of the center. Pass the
picnic shelter on your left. At the fork take the paved trail to the right,
which turns into a dirt path shortly. At next fork bear left down a steep
hill with wooden steps. Bear left at the next intersection to cross a
wooden bridge. After the bridge go about 81 feet to the Liriodendron
tulipifera on your right. (O.k., well take pity on you, its the tree with
blue trail blaze). Take a compass reading of 236 degrees and head 147 feet
into the woods towards the 2-in-1 tree. Look for the small hollow log on
the ground in front of the 2-in-1 tree and near the 12 foot Ilex opaca
tree. The box is hidden in the small log covered by bark.
Box 2
Return to the path and turn right. Bear left at the Y. Cross over two
small foot -bridges. At the next intersection go straight-ahead and follow
the path with the blue trail blaze on the Liriodendron tulipifera. Cross the
next four bridges/boardwalks. Walk some more and enjoy the sights and sounds
of the swamp. Look for the Fagus grandifolia tree with the blue bow
blaze. Go to the back of the tree and find carved initials W.M. + M.G. Take
a compass reading of 290 degrees and walk to the cracked tree. From the
cracked tree take a compass reading of 166 degrees and walk 80 feet to the
two Quercus alba trees covered with moss at the bottom. Stand between the
trees and look 208 degrees for a fallen Pinus virginiana with exposed roots.
The box is hidden under the base of the tree covered with sticks and leaves.
Box 3
Go back to the Fagus grandifolia tree with the blue bow. Take the path
keeping the swamp on your right, follow along the path to find the old
yellow wooden trail marker on your left. From the trail marker take a
compass reading of 262 degrees and go 79 feet. Dont go too far or youll
end up in the creek! Look for two fallen trees that form an X. X marks
the spot where the last box is hidden under some bark and leaves.
To return to the Nature Center just retrace your steps. Be sure to visit
the Nature Center and take a stroll around the pond before you leave.
In case youve forgotten your Latin:
Liriodendron tulipifera Tuliptree
Quercus alba White Oak
Fagus grandifolia - American Beech
Ilex opaca American Holly
Pinus virginiana Virginia Pine
